Description

This Fried Cabbage with Sausage recipe is a quick, hearty one-pan meal packed with smoky flavor, tender cabbage, and savory sausage. Perfect for busy weeknights, it’s simple, budget-friendly, and incredibly satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium green cabbage, chopped
  • 12 oz smoked sausage, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup shredded carrots (optional)
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp mustard (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare all ingredients by chopping cabbage, slicing sausage, and onions.

2. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

3. Add sausage slices and cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes. Remove and set aside.

4. Add remaining oil and butter to the pan, then cook onions until soft and golden.

5. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

6. Add chopped cabbage and stir well. Cook for 8–10 minutes until slightly softened.

7. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and red pepper flakes. Add carrots if using.

8. Pour in chicken broth, cover, and cook for 5–7 minutes until tender.

9. Remove lid, let excess liquid evaporate, then return sausage to the pan.

10. Add apple cider vinegar and mustard, stir well, and cook for 2–3 minutes.

11. Taste, adjust seasoning, and garnish with parsley before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute turkey or chicken sausage for a lighter version.
  • Add potatoes or serve over rice for a more filling meal.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat with a splash of broth to keep it moist.
  • Freezes well for up to 2 months, though cabbage may soften slightly.
